Review Paper 6

Service Sector Performance: An introduction to the SERVICEGAP project

Mary O'Mahony (BHAM)

Abstract

This paper first describes trends in output and labour productivity in market service sectors in the EU, focusing on comparing the years affected by the financial crisis with the previous boom period. It shows a pronounced downturn since 2007 in real output but less so in market services than in production industries. The latter also experienced the greatest decline in labour input but the net effect remains much worse labour productivity decreases in production industries. The paper then introduces the papers and literature reviews undertaken as part of the SERVICEGAP project - covering impacts of the financial crisis, linkages between manufacturing and services, investment in intangibles assets, information technology and innovation in services, the regulatory environment and internationalisation of services.
