Felix Roth (CEPS), Anna Thum (CEPS) and Mary O'Mahony (BHAM)

Abstract

This literature review differentiates the literature on intangible capital and labour productivity growth according to the estimation method used. It first discusses the most recent papers using a growth accounting methodology and then intangible capital papers which use a growth econometric approach. The latter include papers on R&D, human capital and social capital. The paper examines individual types of intangible capital, namely computerized information, innovative property and economic competencies. The review stresses the importance of intangible capital for the service sector and introduces possible methodological approaches to be explored further in the SERVICEGAP project.
